Coast to Coast

We will be hiring boats for the Coast to Coast on Saturday 18th May 2018.

Single sea kayaks cost £65, Single Racing Surf Ski £85, Doubles £95 per boat.  We transport the boats to the kayaking start point and collect them from you at the end. You will need your support team to help carry the boat down to the water for you – it is about 100m from the car park to the water.  We provide buoyancy aid, paddle and spray deck (if needed for the water conditions on the day), but please let us know if you intend to bring your own.  The boats are equipped with back rests and there will be someone there to help sort out foot rests and so forth to speed you on your way.  We will have people out on the water to help, if you have any problems, and there will be someone waiting at the end to take the boat and equipment off you with minimal delay.  The paddle starts in Ballinamore and ends in Ballyconnell – approx. 27km.  The route is downstream, generally not much current (depending on weather conditions).  The first 1km along the canal has high banks where it would be difficult to get out.  There are then several locks requiring portage and you cross several lakes – Garadice in particular is quite exposed and may be choppy.  The fastest paddlers take around 3 hours – most people quite a bit longer, maybe even 6 or more.  It is not possible to keep the full route under supervision – you need to be competent to manage the conditions yourself and prepared to accept the inherent risks.

We have a number of boats available - the doubles are Necky Amaruks or Lookshas, the singles are Capellas, Pryhana Easky or Juras suitable for all abilities.  We also have two sit-on top surf skis, which are not recommended for the novice paddler, all boats are made of plastic,  When booking a boat we will need information on height and build to make sure we have suitably sized buoyancy aids for you.  We also need to know if you are planning to do the non-stop or the 2 day race, and we ask for emergency information as there isn’t always a 26eXtreme representative with us should you need first aid.  Personal information is not shared with any third party, of course.

There are Terms and Conditions of hire, as you might expect.  Please take the time to read over these and don’t just tick the box – it’s not a long document.  I would in particular remind you to tell your support team not to drag the boat at any time – the plastic can surprisingly quickly be irreparably damaged.

We can offer training to help you prepare for the race, and would recommend that you consider taking this option as some basic training can make a real difference both to your speed, and to the amount of energy you expend.  There are several ways to go about this - hire, where you take the boats yourself to practise at a time that suits you (conditions involved!), a private instructor lead session, or joining one of our instructor-supervised group sessions.

A two hour private session with an instructor (boats supplied), at a mutually agreed time, costs £60 for one person or £45 per head for a small group for 2 hours.  Hire of boat only without an instructor costs £30 for two hours at Shaw’s Bridge (we can arrange to meet you at a different venue, but extra charges will apply).  Either kayak hire or a private instructor lead session would need to be paid for in advance and we need a few days' notice to organise an instructor for you – give Stella a ring in the office on 028 9064 6695 to arrange a session.

Alternatively, we will be offering practise sessions at Shaw’s Bridge on Saturday mornings, after Easter, for £20 per person.  You need to pre-book, by ringing Stella, so that we can make sure that we have a sea kayak ready for you – the Necky Lookshas will not be available for training, but we can lend you a Necky Amuruk which is similar.  If you want to combine this training with other race preparation you could perhaps run or cycle to Shaw’s Bridge and we can lock your gear in our trailer while you are on the water – no guarantees that someone won’t break in and steal it, but it hasn’t happened yet!

We are also planning sea kayaking sessions on Strangford Lough, probably on Monday evenings at Whiterock, Killinchy but we haven’t got a start date for those yet – we’ll see what the weather’s like after Easter…
